Wiarton Willie Predicts Early Spring in Ontario

Spring will be early in Ontario this year, based on the prediction made Thursday morning by the groundhog Wiarton Willie.

The albino marmot has not seen his shadow.

Willie would hold her clairvoyant gift because she was born exactly on the 45th parallel, halfway between Ecuador and the North Pole. That said, his predictions have had mixed results in the past!

In the United States, the famous groundhog Phil from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania saw his shadow on Thursday morning, predicting, contrary to Willie, 6 more weeks of winter.

Groundhog Day takes place on February 2 every year.

According to tradition, if the marmot does not see its shadow, it remains outside because it believes that the worst of the winter has passed and that the mild weather is approaching. If she sees her shadow, she will be so frightened that she will go back to her burrow to sleep another six weeks.
