The rumor that the Auburn Tigers’ starting quarterback would be suspended within a few hours due to an NCAA investigation into a pay-for-play clause that is supposedly attached to Newton’s contract is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstood comment made by Ian Fitzsimmons during a radio broadcast.

After listening to Fitzsimmons a blogger erroneously tweeted a message that read, “ESPN Dallas’ Ian Fitzsimmons is reporting that within 3-4 hours the NCAA is going to suspend Cam Newton,” and the story soon spread across cyberspace.

Auburn Tigers’ coach, Gene Chizik, however quickly shot down those reports and gave this statement to reporters, “I want to get this off the table upfront – Cameron Newton will be playing Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs. We’ve prepared and focused like any other week. Nothing has changed.”
